Is Epoxy Toxic?
Fully cured epoxy flooring is inert and safe to live, cook, and walk barefoot on. The toxicity risk is real only while the coating is uncured: liquid resin and hardener give off fumes and can irritate skin, eyes, and lungs during application and the first days of cure. Once it hardens, that risk is gone.

Is cured epoxy safe?
Yes. Once epoxy has fully cured, the resin and hardener have crosslinked into a stable, inert solid that does not off-gas in normal use. This is why epoxy is used on the floors of hospitals, commercial kitchens, and food plants. The distinction that matters for your health is not epoxy versus no epoxy. It is cured versus uncured.
What is the risk during application?
Uncured epoxy is the part to respect. Liquid resin and especially the hardener release volatile organic compounds and amines that can irritate the eyes, skin, and airways, and can sensitize a person over repeated exposure. This is why professional crews wear gloves, eye protection, and respirators, and why the product’s Safety Data Sheet spells out the hazards and handling. It is a real reason floor coating is not a casual bare-handed job.
What about VOCs and off-gassing in an attached garage?
Ventilation is the whole answer, especially with an attached garage. Coatings are regulated for VOC content: the US EPA sets national limits on architectural coatings, and stricter regional rules like California’s SCAQMD Rule 1113 cap them further, so a compliant product is lower-VOC than it once was. Still, during cure the fumes can travel from an attached garage into the house, so open it up, run fans, keep the door to the living space shut, and stay out until the smell is gone. Low-VOC and water-based epoxies reduce this but do not remove the need to ventilate.
How long until the fumes are gone?
Roughly the length of the cure. The strong smell fades over the first day or two and is generally gone by the time the floor is fully cured, about a week for standard epoxy, faster for polyaspartic. Timing is on the drying and cure page. If a floor still smells strongly well after its cure window, that points to a mixing or product problem, not normal off-gassing.
What most people get wrong
People fear the cured floor and ignore the wet one. The finished surface you live on is inert, so the barefoot-and-pets worry is misplaced. The actual exposure is during the pour and cure, which is exactly when a DIYer without a respirator and ventilation is most at risk, and when an attached garage can push fumes into bedrooms. Treat the install window seriously and the finished floor not at all. That is the reverse of how most people worry about it.
Nobody is poisoned by a cured floor. The danger is the day it goes down, in a closed garage, with no respirator and the door to the house open. That is the part to take seriously.
