Is Epoxy Slippery When Wet?

Yes, a smooth epoxy floor is slippery when wet. The finished film is non-porous, so water sits on top and traction drops. The fix is simple and cheap: an anti-slip additive broadcast into the topcoat, which lifts wet traction above the recognized safety threshold of 0.42 DCOF under the ANSI A326.3 standard. Why is epoxy slippery when wet?

Because it is a smooth, non-porous film and water has nowhere to go. Dry, a clean epoxy floor has plenty of grip. Add water and a thin film sits on the slick surface, so your foot rides on the water instead of the floor. It is the same reason a polished tile or a sealed concrete floor gets slick when wet. Polyaspartic behaves the same way, and a high-gloss finish is the slickest of all.

How is slip resistance measured?

By the dynamic coefficient of friction, or DCOF. The current standard for hard-surface flooring is ANSI A326.3, which measures wet DCOF and sets 0.42 as the minimum for level interior floors expected to get wet. A number at or above 0.42 is considered adequately slip-resistant wet; below it, the floor is a slip risk when water is present. When a product or installer quotes slip resistance, this is the number to ask for.

How do you make an epoxy floor non-slip?

Broadcast an anti-slip additive into the topcoat. Fine aggregate, aluminum oxide, polymer grit, or even silica sand is mixed into or scattered onto the final clear coat to give the surface tooth, which raises wet DCOF above the 0.42 threshold. You choose the grit size for the balance you want: finer for a kitchen you want easy to clean, coarser for a ramp or pool deck where grip matters most. A flake floor already has some texture, but for genuinely wet areas you still add grit.

Where does it matter most?

Anywhere water lands: pool decks, entryways, kitchens, bathrooms, ramps, and commercial washdown floors. Outdoors and around pools, slip resistance is not optional, and it pairs with using polyaspartic for UV stability. For a dry garage the smooth finish is fine, since it rarely gets wet, but the moment a floor sees regular water, the additive earns its keep.

What most people get wrong

They find out their floor is slick after it is installed. Slip resistance is a spec you set before the topcoat goes down, not something you add later without a recoat, so a homeowner who never raised it ends up with a beautiful, dangerous kitchen floor. The other mistake is assuming any textured-looking floor is safe. Ask for the additive by name and, where it matters, the tested DCOF value. A crew that cannot answer has not thought about you walking on it wet.

Does a flake epoxy floor need anti-slip additive? The flake adds some texture, but for genuinely wet areas you still add grit to the topcoat to clear the 0.42 threshold reliably. For a dry garage, flake alone is usually enough.

Is polyaspartic less slippery than epoxy? No, a smooth polyaspartic floor is just as slick wet. The same anti-slip additive is the fix, and outdoors polyaspartic is preferred for UV, not for grip.

Can you add non-slip to an existing epoxy floor? Usually with a fresh anti-slip topcoat over the sound existing floor, rather than by adding grit to what is already cured. It is a recoat, not a quick fix.
