Epoxy vs Polyaspartic: Which Floor Coating Should You Pick?

For an indoor garage where you can spare three or four days, epoxy with a flake broadcast is the better value. For a driveway, a patio, a pool deck, or any job where downtime costs money, polyaspartic is worth the extra $2 to $4 per square foot. Epoxy yellows in sunlight. Polyaspartic does not. The short answer

Neither one is universally better. The winner is set by your space and your schedule, not by the chemistry, and any page that crowns a single champion is selling that champion.

Pick epoxy if: the floor is indoors, out of sunlight, you can give up the space for three or four days, and you want the best value. A flake epoxy garage is the default for a reason.

Pick polyaspartic if: the floor sees sunlight, you cannot lose the space for more than a day, or you are installing in the cold. Outdoors, it is not really a choice, because epoxy yellows.

Cost

Epoxy is cheaper, $3 to $9 per square foot for solid to flake, against $5 to $12 for polyaspartic. The gap is real material and labor cost, not markup. If budget is the deciding factor and the floor is indoors, epoxy wins here.

Cure time and downtime

This is polyaspartic’s strongest practical argument. It returns to service in about a day against roughly three for epoxy. For a business, a shop, or a one-car household, three days offline has a dollar cost, and that cost can close the price gap on its own.

Appearance and UV

Slip and repairability

Epoxy is a little more forgiving underfoot, and polyaspartic is slicker when wet, so a wet-area polyaspartic floor needs an anti-slip additive specified to ANSI A326.3. On repairs, both are difficult to spot-fix invisibly, and both usually want a full recoat rather than a patch, which is worth knowing before you buy either.

The hybrid most good installers actually use

Here is the thing almost nobody searching this term knows exists. You do not have to choose. The system a lot of experienced crews install is a hybrid: an epoxy base coat for its bond and build, with a polyaspartic topcoat for UV stability and a fast final cure. You get epoxy’s lower material cost in the body of the floor and polyaspartic’s color hold and quick return to service on top.

It is not free, it lands between the two on price, and it still lives or dies on prep. But if you were torn between the two, the honest answer is often that the best floor is one coat of each. Ask your installer whether they offer an epoxy base with a polyaspartic topcoat, and why or why not for your space.

What the salesperson will tell you

A polyaspartic installer will tell you epoxy is obsolete and yellows. True about UV, misleading indoors, where epoxy does not see sun and costs less. An epoxy installer will tell you polyaspartic is overpriced and finicky. Also half true, the pot life is unforgiving, but that is a reason to hire a good crew, not to avoid the product outdoors. Each side is telling you the true half that sells their floor. The whole truth is that they are different tools for different jobs.
